Title project:
Development of automatic and controlled processes in relation to addictive behaviors in youth.
Abstract:
In this research project, a recent model (Wiers & Stacy, 2006) which combines the development of automatic and controlled processes in relation to the development of addictive behaviors is tested, using a longitudinal 4-wave design (6 months intervals). Focus is the prediction of smoking and problem drinking, the most prevalent addictive behaviors. The following causal relationships will be assessed: (1) inhibition problems before the onset of substance misuse might lead to substance misuse, (2) substance misuse might lead to strengthened automatic appetitive responses and to a deterioration of inhibitory capacity. These changes are expected to predict further escalation of substance use.
