Engels, Rutger C.M.E. (October 24, 1968).

Rutger Engels is Professor in Developmental Psychopathology at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He is director of the dept. of Developmental Psychopathology, and director of the KNAW-acknowledged (in 2006) Behavioural Science Institute. He received his MA in Social Psychology in 1993 at the University of Groningen and his PhD in 1998 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maastricht. In 1998 he became post-doc at the Dept. of Child and Adolescent Studies at Utrecht University, and in 2000 he was appointed at that group as assistant professor. In 2001, he was appointed as full professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen. His research focuses on the interplay between individual characteristics (e.g., personality, outcome expectancies, genes), environmental cues and actual social interactions on the initiation, maintenance and determination of addictive behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol use, overeating, and drug use. His work is characterized by a multi-disciplinary approach with research designs are employed to test our theoretical models ranging from epidemiological survey studies, lab experiments, systematic observational studies in naturalistic settings to genetic research.

He received many awards and grants, and published extensively in the top-ranking journals in the Addiction and Psychology disciplines. In the past 5 years, he build a large research group, which received excellent ratings at the last international evaluation (5 (quantity), 5 (quality), 5 (viability) and 4 (relevance)). The program has a strong emphasis on training of PhD students, which resulted in, amongst others, four NWO VENI laureates currently working at his group. Dr. Engels’s fundamental research has besides scientific also strong societal impact. Alcohol misuse and smoking among youth is a prominent health concern in the Netherlands, and his studies do not only receive substantial media attention in the past years but also lead to changes in foci in prevention programs. In particular his longitudinal work on the impact of parents on adolescent drinking affects policy and prevention in the Netherlands.
